Is It Better to Repair or Replace an Aircraft Cylinder?

A cost-benefit and risk analysis of repair vs. replacement to help you make the best decision

We ruminate over the benefits of repair vs. replacement for everything from more insignificant items like a jacket with a zipper that sticks, to the vehicles we rely on every day; but do you know what is best when it comes to your aircraft cylinders?

Aircraft engines should be topped in a manner which is timely enough to promote optimal performance and safety, but replacing cylinders that are in good working order because they might fail may be both costly and unnecessary. Although (as with everything) there are certainly benefits to just buying new, there are instances when it simply makes more sense to overhaul your jugs.

Take, for instance, a situation where you have one or two soft cylinders. You may be wondering if the other cylinders will also fail soon. That isn’t necessarily the case, and with the guidance of an experienced aircraft cylinder overhaul expert, like those at Moore Performance Products, you can determine the best, most cost-effective option for your particular situation.

By lending a professional eye to the matter, a knowledgeable aircraft cylinder specialist can tell you, for example, that even though you have lost compression due to one faulty cylinder, a complete top overhaul is overkill; and repairing or replacing the one cylinder in question is a more appropriate and economical solution. There are times when aircraft owners can be too proactive and selective repair or replacement of a faulty aircraft cylinder may be the right decision – such as an occasion in which an airplane shows no signs of corrosion and its remaining cylinders exhibit strong compression and clean bores.

How Do You Know an Aircraft Cylinder Repair Is Necessary?

So, what are some signs that indicate an aircraft cylinder repair may be needed? One of the more obvious signs that an aircraft cylinder requires service may include a cylinder crack resulting in oil seepage.

Poor seals can also cause problems. When the aircraft engine is not running, a poor seal between the rings and cylinder may allow oil to seep into the spark plugs, filling them with oil and leading to fouled plugs.

Another evident sign of engine issues is when your aircraft engine oil darkens soon after an oil change. This could indicate piston problems, which might include worn or broken piston rings and blow-through which could result in fouled plugs and excessive crankcase pressure.

Additionally, as you are most likely aware, you also need to keep a keen eye on compression. Believe it or not, you can sometimes simply rely on your hearing or feeling to diagnose compression problems. Case in point…if your aircraft cylinder is failing to maintain pressure, you may be able to determine where the air is escaping simply by listening or feeling for that unwelcome air flow.

Subtler signs that you are in need of aircraft cylinder repair or replacement may only be uncovered by a trained aircraft cylinder mechanic. For instance, while you may be able to tell that you might have a blow-by issue by the fact that your oil smells different, a trained mechanic can also help you determine the actual extent of your blow-by issue. Additionally, an oil analysis by an aircraft mechanic can help more accurately bisect the situation by providing a breakdown of the quantity of each material present within an oil sample, uncovering any abnormalities and pinpointing exactly where they are occurring.

What Does an Aircraft Cylinder Overhaul Include?

An aircraft cylinder overhaul will include a breakdown cylinders for cleaning and inspection for corrosion, cracks and other damage. This not only includes the cylinder itself, but the valve seats and plug bosses. A quality aircraft cylinder overhaul should also include the replacement of valves, valve seats, guides, bushings, pistons and rings. In addition, the condition of the cylinder head should be assessed and, of course, be addressed as necessary.

All mechanical parts can experience fatigue and subsequent wear, especially within the harsh environment of an airplane engine. A qualified and reputable airplane cylinder mechanic can help you determine whether or not to repair or replace your aircraft cylinders and which need immediate attention. Many cylinders can even be overhauled more than once.
