What Happens If You Ignore Your Aircraft Cylinder Maintenance?

Exploring the risks of neglecting aircraft cylinder repairs, including performance issues and safety hazards…

This reminds me of a long ago incident I watched unfold between an old timer and his grandkids. As he tried to coax those reluctant children into brushing their teeth, he said, “Ignore them and they will go away.”

The same holds true if you ignore your aircraft cylinder maintenance. When applying that grandparent’s approach to aircraft cylinders, “they” would refer to proper functioning of your aircraft and the subsequent risks to your aircraft and danger to anyone aboard your flight; because when you neglect the proper maintenance of aircraft cylinders, including timely overhauls, you will undoubtedly compromise the performance of your aircraft and the safety of not only yourself, but your passengers.

Neglected aircraft cylinder repairs and improper aircraft cylinder maintenance can affect numerous factors which are vital to the performance of your aircraft, including your power output, temperature regulation, efficient air and fuel exchange, volumetric efficiency, exhaust function and even the expected longevity of your aircraft. So, let’s address good aircraft cylinder hygiene, shall we?

First things first. Preventive aircraft cylinder maintenance, including aircraft cylinder checks, repair and/or overhaul, is paramount to flight safety as well as engine reliability. Conversely, reactive repairs can lead to excessive damage and downtime. Consequently, the bottom line here is that it behooves us to uncover potential aircraft engine issues before they become big problems with even bigger price tags. An aircraft preventive maintenance plan should include regular testing and analysis, checks for wear on engine and other aircraft parts, component cleaning and lubricating, as well as the replacement of aircraft engine parts as necessary.

High Temps and Aircraft Cylinder Cracks

Let’s get down to brass tacks…and cracks. Aircraft cylinders are the hottest part of the engine; and an aircraft cylinder operating at higher than normal temperatures or with leaky exhaust ports can greatly increase the probability of cracks and other damage, very likely leading to some serious engine issues. Aircraft cylinder cracks, at best, will result in low compression and, at worst, could result in catastrophic engine failure. No matter the extent, an aircraft cylinder crack is serious enough to warrant grounding until that aircraft cylinder can be repaired. In the interest of the longevity of our aircraft engines and safety, we need to keep our cylinders cool and conduct regular aircraft cylinder inspections.

Wear and Head & Barrel Separation

Head and barrel separation is another potential issue if aircraft cylinders are left unchecked. These types of problems can arise because you have an aluminum head which screws onto a steel barrel – very different metals with very different heat tolerances, which can obviously become problematic when it comes to wear…and when that required precise fit becomes less than precise, you’re looking at a greatly increased potential of a forced landing.

Extreme Conditions and Valves

Cylinder valves operating in extreme conditions can lead to the wear of the actual valve, valve seat, spring or lifters if aircraft cylinder maintenance is ignored. Faulty cylinder valves can reduce your compression and, ultimately, the power of your aircraft. Plus, when a valve actually breaks apart, those broken pieces of metal can cause some really big problems.

Adherence to Aircraft Cylinder Manufacturer Specifications

Since each aircraft engine is regulated by its own specific manufacturer specifications, proper adherence to your particular aircraft engine manufacturer’s recommendations is imperative. Various mechanical tests and services should be performed at the suggested intervals. Life expectancy for engine parts, such as aircraft cylinders, is also provided within manufacturer specifications. Aircraft cylinder overhauls should be performed when your manufacturer suggests it, as well as if other signs indicating trouble on the horizon are detected, such as cracks, leaks, fouled plugs and compression depletion.
